Tradições

Nas longínquas Ilhas Faroe, uma possessão dinamarquesa colonizada por vikings e localizada entre a Dinamarca e a Islândia, uma antiga tradição promove todos os anos nas baías das ilhas uma matança de golfinhos calderón (pilot whales). É um rito de passagem para que o jovens entrem na idade adulta. Para provar que já são machos, a molecada viking entra na água e mata o golfinho com um gancho de metal.
Há um email circulando por aí com fotos como essa itntitulado Vergonha da Dinamarca ou algo assim. O email foi para um amigo na Holanda que passou para um amigo dinamarquês que devolveu com o comentário:
"Okay, now I understand. It is the Faroe Islands. I know it is official a part of Denmark - they are independent of Denmark, with their own government and all. Language and all are very much different from Danish. Killing of the pilot whale is - unfortunately - a part of their history and a heritage of this country. Like the seal killing in Greenland. It have never been accepted by the Danes. Personally I think it is disgusting and I have no understanding for the heritage of killing the Whales. I strongly put a line under that this is not Denmark and never will be.
But I can understand that there could be - when it is presented like this - misunderstanding. It make me very sad - and a bit angry - that people in the world have this picture of Denmark, due to the facts written above. Please inform your friends of this. But still they have to keep in mind that things similar to this happens in many small an bigger countries around the world - not an excuse, but a explanation - like Japan killing whales around the world in big floating whale factories, in Spain they kill Bulls for fun and entertainment, in China they eat dogs - I could continue, but I do hope you see my point. But still not an excuse for what the Faroe Island do".
Quem sou eu para dar palpite em tradições milenares de povos que não tem nada a ver comigo, mas mesmo assim guardamos a esperança de que os Faroesenses um dia perceberão que este espetáculo é triste demais. Quem sabe eles substituam essa tradição por uma saudável ida ao puteiro para provar que são machos e deixem os golfinhos em paz.
